  1. Monty

I’ve been using a large saw with a 60″ bar and have been really struggling with setting the height of the cut on my Alaskan Mill. The marking (ruler) are such a fine etching on the metal that only under perfect conditions can you read them and in reality you can’t ever see them. Secondly if you use a tape measure the best place to measure from has rounded edges, again making it impossible to be accurate. Thirdly, loosening the U clamp bolts takes way too many turns to allow it to adjust. Too many turns and it slips, not enough and it just won’t move easily. This is extremely important to get these measurements correct and without me modifying a number of things it’s just not happening.

I know changing the mill and modifying the mill will add additional costs, but some people (me) want and need a fast accurate means to do this work. Making changes in the field at this point is not functional.

I also added a hand winch and would not be able to use the mill without it. I’m cutting old Eucalyptus which is 41 inches wide and very hard. It takes about 30 minutes to cut 101 inches. My 088 uses one full tank of gas plus for every slab cut. I have a secondary oilier too. The oil tube bar attachment fitting continues to clog so I am forced to just drip the plastic tube onto the bar.

Other than my saw, bar and ripping chain I’m finding most of the products are not performing with any degree of value.

I like to save money as much as anyone else, but I’m also willing to pay extra for products that work. I think most of the online videos demonstrating these products are not honest or these people don’t value their time and giving a thumbs-up to products I’m finding are closer to junk because most of these products are functioning poorly.

My end product is good, it’s just not a very cost effective products just yet.
